Description
Attributed to Alexander GALLOWAY (active between 1794 and 1812)
Lucy of Leinster
Watercolour and gouache, oval
17.5 x 12.5 cm
There is a monogram ‘A. G.’ on the tree, centred on the right-hand side.
The subject of our miniature is taken from a 1725 poem, *Colin and Lucy*, written by Thomas
Thirckell, a minor English poet. This text, recounting the tragic love story of Lucy, with
elements of the supernatural, enjoyed immense popularity in the late 18th century and during the
first half of the 19th century.
Our miniature is probably a reproduction of the illustration engraved in 1788 by William Ward.
