The Sultan, France, c. 1760 Folded fan,
the leather panel lined with paper and painted in gouache, depicting a sultan receiving
a visit from a lady of high standing on the terrace of a palace. Servants are bringing
baskets of flowers or playing music.
The reverse side is painted with a couple in a sweeping landscape.
Brown tortoiseshell frame, re-drilled, engraved and gilded with a decoration of trophies and
Chinese figures.
