Description
The Oublies Vendor, France, c. 1760 Folded fan,
The leather leaf lined with paper and painted in gouache with a romantic scene set in a rural setting. An ‘oubli’ drum attracts children, whilst the vendor attempts to charm an elegant young woman. The reverse side is painted with a fisherman holding a young lady at the end of his fishing rod. The frame is made of white mother-of-pearl, finely pierced, carved, engraved and inlaid, silver-plated and gilded with a decoration of cupids and a group of musicians and suitors.
