The lid features a decoration illustrating scenes evoking the history of the First Empire, the imperial armies and Emperor Napoleon I. -‘The guard dies but does not surrender’. Diameter 10.5 cm Accompanied by a quote attributed to Cambronne at Waterloo, two soldiers of the Grande Armée fight to their last breath. -‘The military gavotte’. Diameter 8.5 cm Napoleon’s soldiers dance and rest in the company of young women. The background features a delicate geometric pattern with interlaced and striped effects. -‘The Invalids on a spree’. D. 8.3 cm A humorous composition depicting drunken former soldiers. The background features a plumetis effect. -‘Historical Event’. D. 8.5 cm The design echoes that of the snuffbox entitled ‘La garde meurt et ne se rend pas’ (The Guard dies but does not surrender). The background is adorned with a radiating geometric pattern. -Napoleon standing with his arms crossed, in front of banners, drums and sprigs of laurel.
