A set of ten Gustavian-style chairs in the style of Ephraïm STAHL, Sweden, 19th century carved and moulded wood, re-lacquered in white and gold; the openwork backrest with a band supported by five small columns, decorated with waterleaf motifs; tapered front legs; sabre-shaped rear legs with connecting blocks adorned with small floral motifs. H: 90 – W: 49 – D: 42 cm Damage, restoration, missing parts, cracks, reinforcements, stains Provenance: -Golovanoff Gallery Ephraïm Ståhl was one of the most famous Swedish cabinetmakers in Stockholm in the late 18th century. Active from 1794 to 1821, he notably produced several sets of chairs and armchairs for the royal family and the Swedish castles of Hylinge and Gripsholm, now housed in the Royal Palace. He is a leading exponent of the Gustavian style, which predominated from the 1780s onwards in Swedish architecture and the decorative arts. The style is named after King Gustav III of Sweden, who, following his stay at Versailles in 1771, introduced his taste for French furniture to the court. Bibliography: H.
