Description
Sideboard, Italy, Lombardy, 19th century, reminiscent of the work of Adriano Brambilla in walnut and ebony veneer, with ‘alla certosina’ marquetry decoration, the upper section opening via two doors, the lower section a console fitted with a large drawer, the sinuous base surmounted by male faces and ending in claw feet, the pediment cut away. Ornamentation comprising bone plaques engraved with figures in the Renaissance style against a geometric marquetry background in the Moorish style, featuring stars, rosettes, floral scrolls and foliage. H: 211 – W: 134 – D: 59 cm Signs of wear, damage, losses, cracks The cabinet presented here is characteristic of the eclecticism and monumentality of the Umbertino style, named after Umberto I; it can be compared to the works of Adriano Brambilla (1822–1885) or one of his followers, owing to the richness of the materials used, its decorative elements drawn from both the Renaissance and Gothic repertoires, and its inlaid decoration known as ‘alla certonisa’.
