Albert Ernest CARRIER-BELLEUSE (1824–1887) Angélique in Chains Directly carved sculpture in Carrara marble H: 70 cm Signed ‘A. Carrier Belleuse’ on the plinth Signs of wear, soiling and hairline cracks which do not affect the structural integrity of the work The composition of the work illustrates one of the cantos of Ariosto’s *Orlando Furioso*. Angelica is depicted chained to a rock, about to be devoured by a sea monster, from which she will be rescued by Roger. The original exhibited at the 1866 Salon was in white marble, with copper chains. Three smaller marble versions are known to exist. When it was exhibited in 1866, critics praised the sculptor’s boldness: ‘Chained to the rock, her head thrown back, terrified, her knees drawn up, her torso thrown forward, she seems to be making desperate efforts to escape the smisurato mostro. Her immense and implausible hair falls to her feet in broad plaits; gilded copper chains bind her wrists and ankles: it is high time Roger arrived. There are elements in this figure that have been masterfully executed: I would point out, amongst other things, the knees, which are very beautiful, studied with great care and rendered with a precision that is by no means lacking in elegance’.
