Description
Flat-bottomed 950‰ silver tumbler with engraved medallion decoration of foliate clasps and flowers, one decorated with the numeral N under an imperial crown. Marked Minerve 1st title. Master silversmith: Eusèbe CALLOT. Weight: 130.3 g - Height: 9.5 cm This silver kettledrum by Eusèbe CALLOT, active in Paris from 1847 to 1865, decorated with the crowned imperial cipher of Napoleon III (1808-1873), is in the tradition of gifts given to godchildren of the Empire. Under the Second Empire, the Emperor and the imperial family agreed to be godparents to children, often from deserving families, soldiers, civil servants or notables. On this occasion, it was customary to offer a piece of silverware, such as a kettledrum or goblet, engraved with the imperial cipher. In addition to its usual function, the object was a symbol of honour, imperial protection and social advancement, preserved for life as a souvenir of this prestigious patronage.
