Description
Gandhara, North Kushan, 2nd/3rd century
Bust of a winged Atlas in sculpted grey schist, head turned slightly to the right, eyes wide open, right shoulder raised.
Height: 19 cm - Width: 18 cm - Height: 11 cm
Provenance: former Meyer collection.
In Greek mythology, Atlas was punished by Zeus and condemned to carry the heavens for eternity. Here, with his right shoulder raised, we can make out the movement of his arms to support the heavens.
In Gandharan art, it is often found at the base of a stupa, supporting its architecture.
