Description
FEDERICO FASOLI ‘BULLA’ PENDANT In filigree and twisted yellow gold, adorned with micromosaics (some missing) depicting a cherub surmounted by a chi-rho and two doves holding an olive branch. Goldsmith’s hallmark. Hallmark of the Camerale Romano (Papal States). Circa 1866–1872. An 18k gold and micromosaic pendant, by Federico Fasoli. Circa 1866–1872. Note: Carrying on the traditions of ancient Rome, the bulla enjoyed a resurgence in the 19th century, fuelled by a passion for archaeology. Our example is a testament to this mid-century production, when the rediscovery of ancient techniques such as granulation contributed to the renaissance of Italian ornamentation. We extend our warmest thanks to Mr Aldo Vitali, Consul of the Camerlengo dell’Università and the Nobil Collegio degli Orefici in Rome, for his invaluable assistance and the information he provided for the study of this piece. RC: Hallmark of the Camerale Romano (1815–1872): crossed keys surmounted by the papal tiara. Some areas of the micromosaic are missing. Dimensions: 5 x 3 cm. Gross weight: 32.7 g (18k – 750).
