Description
The King’s bodyguard’s helmet, 1st model, 1814–1815.
Helmet, visor and neck guard in black patent leather. Crest decorated with feathers and acanthus leaves at the base, palm motifs on the helmet, a plaque depicting a radiant sun with a human face beneath a royal crown, framed by the royal cipher, the whole set against a background of clouds and a banner bearing the inscription ‘NEC PLURIBUS IMPAR’; scale-patterned chin straps lined with black rough-textured velvet and silver-plated copper. Radiating bossets decorated with motifs of suns with human heads in silver-plated copper. Chin strap fastenings in silver-plated trimmings, with tassels and fringes. Mane in black horsehair.
Silver-plated plume holder. Inner cap in leather with a black silk lining.
Plume of white feathers, with a silver-plated base as per the model, at the rear.
Signs of wear on the visor and a tear in the base of the cap; complete.
