Untitled [Fantastic Animal]
Pen, ink, pencil and acrylic on canvas mounted on board.
66 x 85 cm.
Note:
TWINS SEVEN-SEVEN (Taiwo Olaniyi Oyewale-Toyeje Oyelale Osuntoki) was born in Nigeria in 1944.
He adopted his artist name, Twins Seven-Seven, in memory of his ‘miraculous’ birth; he is the sole surviving child of seven sets of twins.
A musician and dancer, he turned to the visual arts in the 1960s when he joined the Osogbo studio in Ibadan, where he painted, drew, sculpted, designed textiles and worked with metal.
His pictorial work draws on Yoruba tradition, blending spirituality, mythology and narrative tales to create a dreamlike and fantastical world populated by humans, animals, plants and deities.
He gained international renown in 1989 by taking part in the seminal exhibition ‘Magiciens de la Terre’ at the Centre Georges Pompidou and the Grande Halle de la Villette in Paris, where he represented Africa alongside artists from around the world.
His works feature in prestigious collections, including the MoMA in New York, the Musée de l’Homme in Paris, the Fowler Museum in Los Angeles, the National Museum of African Art in Washington and the National Museum of Art in Lagos.
