Description
A lady’s writing desk at armrest height, opening at the top to reveal a drawer and a blue velvet-upholstered flap, behind which are three drawers in two rows and a compartment. A door at the bottom opens to reveal four English-style sliding drawers. It features extensive marquetry in veneered and stained wood, decorated with friezes of foliage, musical trophies, small flowers and diamond-shaped panels. The flared sides are decorated with quivers and arrows. The top is of moulded white marble veined with grey. The uprights are fluted baluster columns with rings, resting on four spindle legs. Stamped on the lock: GRADE and PELCOT, 9 Rue Castex, Paris. Second half of the 19th century Minor signs of wear and sun damage visible. Dimensions: 132 x 83 x 40 cm. Originally known as ‘Gradé’ in 1852, then ‘Gradé et Pelcot’ from 1866 onwards, this manufacturer of furniture, works of art and decorative items took part in the World’s Fairs of 1851, 1855 and 1867, for which it received awards.
