Lot no. 7
Description
An 18K (750‰) yellow gold cutaway "Lover's Eye" brooch adorned with a gouache-painted miniature depicting a male eye, presented beneath a bevelled mirror encircled by a string of pearls.
Master-smith: Henri LEGENDRE (HL with an axe).
19th century.
Gross weight: 11.3 g.
3.5 x 2.7 cm.
Provenance: This jewel has remained in a Touraine aristocratic family since the 19th century.
Note: This perfectly preserved brooch is an extraordinary example of the "lover's eye" jewel of the 19th century. Inherited from British fashion in the early 19th century, this jewellery, whether brooch, bracelet or even ring, was intended to represent the male or female eye of the loved one in painted miniature.
