Minor restorations
Anatole Charlemagne began his career as an officer in 1840, being made a Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur in 1854 and promoted to Officer in 1864. He died in the wreck of the propeller-driven aviso Monge.
In October 1868, the Monge left Saigon for Japan on a hydrographic mission. After her departure, there was no news of the ship, and the search for her was unsuccessful.
At the end of 1868, the maritime authorities in Cochinchina made her disappearance official by declaring that "the Monge, of which there has been no news since 1 November, must be considered as lost body and property in the China Sea".
It is highly likely that the vessel sank off the coast of Annam during the typhoon that hit the region hard on 4 November 1868.
