Study of the major face of the shrine of Saint Stephen from Gimel-les-Cascades (Corrèze)
Black pencil and watercolour, signed and dated 1883 lower left

In 1890, the archaeologist Ernest Rupin published "L'Oeuvre de Limoges" (Paris, A. Picard), a work dedicated to the study of Limousin enamels from the medieval period. The drawing shown here illustrates the way in which the historian worked, photographing and drawing the subjects of his studies. The shrine shown here, which illustrates the life of the first Christian martyr, is currently housed in the church of Saint-Pardoux in Gimel-les-Cascades and dates from the 2nd quarter of the 12th century. Stolen in July 1991, it was recovered in Italy in 1992 and returned in 1993.
Our watercolour was photographed by its creator and the negative is currently in the Musée Labenche in Brive (inv. no. 96.23.1-32).
