American jeweller.
Founded in 1801, the company changed its name to Black, Starr & Frost, INC at the beginning of the 20th century and set up shop on 5th Avenue. Its production combined the highest quality craftsmanship with the most sumptuous stones. His designs, with their simple lines, were traditional interpretations of styles of European origin, interpreted in such a way as to satisfy a more classical American taste.
B.S.&F.'s keen understanding of its customers' expectations has made it one of New York's most prestigious jewellery houses. As well as jewellery, jewellers also made highly ornate, luxurious toiletries. These items reached a level of quality comparable to European creations. In 1929, Black, Starr & Frost merged with Gorham, a renowned silver silversmith. Eager to compete with Cartier's mysterious clocks, they developed a series of elaborate clocks decorated with fine hard stones, including rock crystal and jade, inlaid with mother-of-pearl and chased gemstones enriched with enamel on gold. As with Cartier, their designs are inspired by the geometric lines of Art Deco and historical Persian and Oriental influences. The partnership ended in 1966, when the 5th Avenue shop closed.
Black Starr and Frost is one of the jewellery houses named by Marilyn Monroe in her famous song "Diamonds are a girl's best friend".
