RUSSIAN IMPERIAL AUTOMOBILE COMPANY - Cigarette case in vermeil with wavy blue enamel decoration on all sides, the ends encircled by a two-tone 18k (750 thousandths) yellow gold frieze decorated with foliage. It opens with a push-button lid set with rose-cut diamonds, decorated in the centre with a polychrome design representing the initials of the Société Impériale Russe de l'Automobile, probably surmounted by the arms of the city of Moscow (enamel missing from the corners of the hinge). Attributed to SOUMINE of Saint Petersburg. Early 20th century Gross weight: 256.5 g - Length: 102 mm - Width: 65 mm - Height: 18 mm We enclose a handwritten card from Raymond Breitling stating: "This cigarette case was presented to my grandfather, Armand Peugeot, by Tsar Nicholas II of Russia, in Saint Petersburg (Leningrad) in 1912. I do not know if it is the work of Fabergé, but it is in his style". Provenance : - Given by Tsar Nicholas II to Armand Peugeot during his visit to Saint Petersburg in 1912. - Then by descent to the current owners. References : - For a case very similar to ours, Rouillac sale 10 June 2018. Almost identical to ours, this case was a gift from the Grand Duchess Anastasia of Russia. The Imperial Russian Automobile Society was founded under the reign of Nicholas II in 1903. The Society had its own premises on the Palace Quay, a technical library, published the "Automobile" magazine, organised international automobile exhibitions in St Petersburg, races and set national and international records. Armand Peugeot came from a family of industrialists in the Doubs département who specialised in the manufacture of coffee grinders. A visionary, he was the founder of the "Société des automobiles Peugeot".
