Description
A silver oval basin resting on four leafy feet, the lower part decorated with shells, the body chased with rocaille motifs on an amati background, the rim moulded with oves.
Master silversmith: Jean Loison, received in 1744
Rennes town hallmark, circa 1774-1777
(Worn, scratched, slightly deformed and slightly banged).
Length: 21.5 cm; Gross weight: 531.5 g.
This basin could have been used either as a cruet basin or as an oil basin. In this case, it is likely that the silversmith designed a multi-purpose model that could be used for either purpose. In fact, a simple adaptation was all that was needed to change its use: the addition of two circles designed to hold glass bottles, completed by two smaller diameter rings for their stoppers, made it easy to transform this basin into an oil and vinegar holder.
By way of comparison, we can mention an almost identical basin - with the notable exception of the feet - published by J.-J. RIOULT and S. VERGNE in Les orfèvres de Haute-Bretagne (Presses Universitaires de Rennes, 2006, Cahiers du Patrimoine, no. 83, no. 253, p. 418-419). Another very similar model, made in 1746 by the same master, was presented at public auction in Morlaix in 1997.
