Description
A large silver chocolatière, standing on four Rococo feet with shell handles, the body chased with broad ribs, the neck and removable hinged lid engraved with lambrequins, foliage and quatrefoils on an amati background, the unscrewable fretel in the form of a leafy knob, the handle in blackened wood. Master silversmith : Lambertus Millé, received in 1738 Hallmark of the city of Brussels, 1742-1745 Height 31.5 cm; Gross weight: 1258.5 g. TOGETHER with an old wooden handle of the chocolate pot (height: 17 cm). This chocolatière illustrates the ornamental vocabulary of 18th century Brussels silverware. Its engraved decoration, composed of lambrequins and foliage characteristic of the Régence style, links it to the taste of the 1730's. However, certain elements bear witness to an evolution towards the Rococo style: the pouring spout, treated in a supple and naturalistic manner, differs from the traditional mascaron models; the rocaille feet, the curved profile of the spout and the design of the attachments herald a freer decorative repertoire that developed in the following decades. The object can therefore be considered a work of stylistic transition. Awarded the title of Master in 1738, Lambertus Millé was one of the silversmiths active in Brussels in the mid-eighteenth century. His work includes a pair of torches that attest to his expertise. The present chocolatière, dated circa 1742-1745 according to the hallmark of the city of Brussels, corresponds to a mature phase of his activity. Expert : SC Emeric & Stephen PORTIER
