The lot presented is neither signed nor hallmarked, but its style is reminiscent of the creations of the Alexis Falize firm and the enamels of Antoine Tard. The Victoria and Albert Museum holds a plaque and a design sketch similar to this lot (inv. 1772:C-1869), whilst a vinegar bottle decorated with a similar crane motif is held at the Rijksmuseum (inv. BK-2009-50). For a comparable form, see K. Purcell, Falize, A Dynasty of Jewellers, p. 225.
Having begun his career at Mellerio in 1833, Alexis Falize developed, from the 1860s onwards, a body of work in which enamel played a significant role. His collaboration with Antoine Tard, notably at the 1869 Exhibition of the Union Centrale des Arts Décoratifs, helped to raise the firm’s profile during the revival of the decorative arts.
Antoine Tard, who initially worked at Christofle, began adapting Japanese motifs and ancient Chinese cloisonné to the techniques of enamel applied to gold jewellery as early as 1868. He is now regarded as one of the great master enamellers of his time.
