Alexandre Mélin, originally from Meuse, spent his entire career in Nancy as a drawing teacher and architect. Along with Albert Cuny, he designed the building that now houses the Goethe Institute. He was an associate national correspondent of the Stanislas Academy and, of course, a member of the Société d'archéologie lorraine and the Musée Lorrain Committee.
