A pupil of Gérôme, and the creator of a large-scale painting known as the ‘Panorama’ (Amsterdam), as well as compositions inspired by medieval history, such as the curious *The Punishment of Adulterers*, J. A. Garnier exhibited at the Salon from 1869 to 1889. In 1877, the year the portrait described above was painted, he produced his ‘Thiers Proclaimed Liberator of the Country’, now in the Musée de Versailles.
