PERIGAUD (active in the first half of the 19th century) Child Saved from the Fire, 1833 Oil on canvas, signed and dated in the lower left-hand corner 72 x 59.5 cm Original stuccoed and gilded wooden frame bearing the title of the work Note the expression and gaze of the mother, whose face conveys fear and terror. This close framing and the subject matter reflect an ideal that would pave the way for a whole generation of Romantic artists. Human drama thus took precedence over a more general vision of history.
