Description
This Gallic gold stater belongs to the series featuring the inverted lyre, attributed to the Carnutes. Middle Loire. This type is very similar to the Macedonian model. Period: 2nd–1st centuries BC Type: stater with a smooth cheek and an inverted lyre. Obverse: inscribed; Chartres mint. Laureate head of Apollo facing right, stylised with an almond-shaped eye, smooth cheek and round cheek bones. Reverse: uninscribed; a two-horse chariot on the right driven by a charioteer; the chariot’s wheel on the far left and an inverted lyre between the legs of the horses, which have rounded joints. Reference: LT 5951VAR-DT 2530. Rarity grade: R2. Weight: 7.27 g. Diameter: 18 mm. TTB+ A very fine specimen (very rare in this condition, R2), perfectly centred.
