Description
A 916-millimetre silver (88 zolotnik) paper-knife/page-maker, the handle in red ornamental stone, decorated with a palmette, engraved with No. 6355 (in a case probably later stamped "Fabergé", wear, scratches) Goldsmith: Anders Johansson Nevalainen, Kokoshnik of the master assayer Yakov Nikolayevich Lyapunov of St Petersburg for 1896-1908, Length : 7.5 cm ; Gross weight: 25 g Anders Johan Nevalainen (1858-1933) was one of the leading silversmiths working for Fabergé, with whom he collaborated almost exclusively from 1885 until the 1917 Revolution. Trained in Finland before moving to St Petersburg, he became a master goldsmith in 1885 and opened his own workshop the same year. Specialising in small silver objects - picture frames, snuffboxes, desk accessories and letter openers - he supplied Fabergé with a large number of items, which were sold under the Fabergé name. His hallmark "A.N." appears discreetly on the reverse of the pieces, but the consistent quality of his work contributed greatly to Fabergé's reputation. After 1917, he returned to Finland, where he died in 1933.
