Description
Jeanine BOUISSOU-JANET (1913–2000) for ARTHUS-BERTRAND, Paris. Brooch in the shape of a galleon, in gilded bronze. 1940s. Height: 6.2 cm.
Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and Toulouse, Janine Janet [née Bouissou] created designs for various fashion houses in the early 1940s: Pierre Frey, Arthus-Bertrand, Christofle. In 1952, she began a long-standing collaboration with Balenciaga. In 1959, she created three carved wooden busts studded with nails for his shop windows on Avenue George V: The King, The Queen and The Jack. This fascination with the dreamlike was brought to life through a perfectly mastered technique, and in 1959 Jean Cocteau, who had noticed her Balenciaga window displays, commissioned her to create the costumes and sets for ‘The Testament of Orpheus’. In the 1960s, other masterpieces such as ‘The Tower of Babel’ were created for Balenciaga’s window displays, whilst the maritime screen featured at the back of a Roger Gallet window display.
