Description
PASCAL (Blaise). *Les Provinciales*, or letters written by Louis de Montalte to a provincial friend of his, and to the Reverend Fathers of the Society of Jesus. Eighth edition, to which has been added a letter from a Barrister of Parliament to one of his friends. Cologne: Nicolas Schoute, 1685; 12mo, marbled fawn calf, ribbed spine with gilt decoration, red edges. (18th-century binding). Title page, 10ff. (preface), 433pp (19 letters), 114 pp. Several editions were published at this address bearing the designation ‘eighth edition’, from as early as 1681. This one, the first of the three published in 1685, is described by Maire II, pp. 213–215. Slight water-stain on the last two quires. 18th-century binding in fine condition.
