BANVILLE (Théodore de): *Odes Funambulesques*. Second edition, preceded by a letter from Victor Hugo, stanzas by Auguste Vacquerie and a letter to Théodore de Banville....by Hippolyte Babou. Paris, Lévy, 1859. Bradel half-cloth binding in wine-coloured half-cloth printed with a dotted pattern, title label. (Later binding) Some foxing, more pronounced on the first few leaves.
Second edition, with numerous alterations. It is not only an expanded edition, but also a revised one, in which fantasy takes precedence over satire. Having come under heavy attack in 1857, Bainville made certain highly witty ‘amendments’ in this new edition. He has not removed any irreverent pieces from his book. He has tempered their meaning by expanding them. V. Hugo, in his letter at the head of the book (in the first edition), was not mistaken. “You have built one of the lyrical monuments of the century....
