Description
Pierre-Auguste BELIN (1821, Boulot - 1890, Dole) Gallant scene Watercolour on paper, signed lower right 37.5 x 24 cm on view Born in Boulot (Haute-Saône) on 26 August 1821; died in Dole (Jura) on 16 July 1890. Pupil of Besson. Founded, with Philippon, the Journal amusant. Had set up a workshop where several other draughtsmen were trained (Dictionnaire des Artistes et Ouvriers d'Art de la Franche-Comté, Abbé Paul Brune, 1912). The Musée de Dole holds a large collection of drawings by Pierre-Auguste Belin. A pupil of Désiré Besson at the drawing school in Dole, Belin quickly made a name for himself in the capital, where his work as a genre draughtsman led him to found a studio in which Jules Chéret (1836-1932) and Alfred Grévin (1827-1892) were trained. He joined forces with journalist and cartoonist Charles Philippon (1800-1862) to create the Journal Amusant, a "humorous work in which the foibles of human nature are given such a fine and witty physiognomy" (La République du Jura, 26 July 1890). The theme of festivity is recurrent in Belin's illustrations. In particular, in the Journal amusant of 2 February 1856, he published Entrée du bal masqué de l'Opéra, which he later used in several works, including Sortie d'un bal masqué. The worldly society of the Second Empire and its taste for ancient art are reflected in his watercolours, with their shimmering colours, lively lines and attention to detail, as in the theatre costumes designed by Grévin and the carnival scenes by Théodore Maurisset (Bénédicte Gaulard, Éclectique XIXe, exhibition catalogue of the Musée des beaux-arts de Dole, 2014).
