Born in Besançon in 1831, Antonin Fanart was one of the leading figures of the Comtoise school in the 19th century, and distinguished himself in landscape painting from the Alps to Franche-Comté. He trained in Geneva, Switzerland, with the mountain painter François Diday. He returned to Besançon in the 1860s.
He exhibited several times at the Salon in Paris and Besançon.
The museums of Besançon, Ornans and Dole hold works by the artist.
