Description
Denis VURPILLOT (Born in Valentigney in 1938) "Onirisme", 1995 Mixed media including acrylic on canvas, signed lower right, titled and dated on the back on the stretcher 64.5 x 91.5 cm This work is part of a group of five canvases produced during the artist's "dream" period. Exhibition: Poitiers, 1995 Provenance: artist's studio A student at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Besançon, Denis Vurpillot's teachers included Georges Oudot, Jean Ricardon and Jean Gilles. He taught visual arts for almost 35 years, all the while devoting himself to his art, with his first solo exhibition in Besançon in 1970, and some thirty exhibitions to his credit to date, in the region and across France. Two retrospective exhibitions have been held, in 2000 and 2025. Denis Vurpillot's pictorial research has led him to use a variety of media (canvas, cardboard, paper, wood, etc.) and materials (acrylic, gouache, pastel, ink, etc.), as well as tapestry (made by the Aubusson weavers) and sculpture. Gestural graphics, tachism, calligraphy, writing, light, colour, sometimes abstract, sometimes closer to poetic realism, his work is diverse, but carried out with one and the same aim, that of creating a poetic and spiritual work. "Vurpillot's painting is a bit like trying to put reality into abstraction [...] Beyond these structural considerations, this painting emanates a beneficial, soothing, serene light, which is undoubtedly the radiance of Denis Vurpillot's faith". (L'Alsacien, 29 June 1982, on the occasion of the artist's exhibition at the Galerie Aktuaryus in Strasbourg). The group of works we are offering at this auction provides an overview of Denis Vurpillot's work, from the 1970s to the 2000s. These works were kept in the studio for the foundation project, which unfortunately did not come to fruition due to the death of its founder.
