Description
THOMAS ENGEL (1927–2015) – ‘In homage to A. L. Breguet’ Observatory Competition-style chronometer. No. 34. A rare, high-precision pocket watch crafted by Thomas Engel in the spirit of 19th-century observatory chronometers and as a tribute to the creations of Abraham-Louis Breguet. Empire-style yellow gold case with a screw-down caseback; the reverse is entirely decorated with remarkable concentric guilloché work. A ball-shaped lug serving as the winding crown. A guilloché silver dial with a studded centre, Roman numeral hour track, and blued steel hands in the Breguet style. Power reserve indicator at 12 o’clock, moon phase display at 7 o’clock, and central seconds hand. Hand-wound mechanical movement signed Ths. Engel, engraved ‘Chronometer – Type Concours Observatoire’, numbered 34, with an anchor escapement, visible jewels, precision adjustment and gold-plated finish. Presented in its original box inscribed: “Thomas Engel – Chronométrie Classique – In homage to A.L. Breguet – High-Precision Watches – Type Concours Observatoire”. Diameter: 55 mm Gross weight: 200.36 g Provenance: Offered directly by the watchmaker and has remained in a private collection in Saint Paul de Vence. Note: Fascinated by the work of Abraham-Louis Breguet, of whom he was one of the leading historians, Thomas Engel developed, from the 1960s onwards, a series of high-precision pocket watches inspired by classic chronometers. Produced in very limited numbers and generally numbered, the ‘Type Concours Observatoire’ watches are based on movements selected for their chronometric performance and are now the most sought-after part of his watchmaking output.
