Portrait of René III de Froullay, Count of Tessé, Marshal of France (1651–1725)
Original canvas
Height: 81 cm
Width: 64 cm
René III de Froullay, Count of Tessé, was a general and diplomat under Louis XIV. Appointed Lieutenant-General of Maine, Perche and Laval in 1680, his numerous military victories earned him, in succession, the Order of the Holy Spirit in 1694, the rank of Marshal in 1703 and the title of Grandee of Spain in 1704. He was also appointed First Squire to the Dauphine and General of the French Galleys.
From the 1700s onwards, he played a diplomatic role in relations between France, Italy and Spain. In 1725, upon the abdication of Philip V, he was sent on a mission to the court of Madrid: he succeeded in persuading the king to return to the throne and was awarded the Order of the Golden Fleece.
Expert: Cabinet Turquin. Mrs Philippine Motais de Narbonne.
