Description
GABON, Kota. A throwing knife known as an ‘Osélé’ or ‘Musélé’, made of brass and iron. Large, hammered and flattened blade in the shape of a bird’s head (hornbill). Late 19th century. 34 x 34.5 cm.
Provenance: collected in situ by Camille Urbain Narcisse CUNY (1863–1917), then passed down through his descendants. Camille Cuny, an accountant, made two trips to Gabon-Congo, the first between March 1893 and March 1896, and the second from October 1899 to October 1900 (see list of his places of residence, military file – page 641 of the register –, Vosges Departmental Archives, reference 1R1317-112473). Family tradition holds that he took part for a time in Captain Jean-Baptiste Marchand’s mission.
