Description
GABON, Kota. Large throwing knife known as an ‘Osélé’ or ‘Musélé’, made of wood, brass and iron. Large, hammered and flattened blade in the shape of a bird’s head (hornbill). Late 19th century. 51 x 35 cm. Provenance: collected in situ by Camille Urbain Narcisse CUNY (1863–1917), then passed down through the family. Camille Cuny, an accountant, made two trips to Gabon-Congo, the first between March 1893 and March 1896, and the second from October 1899 to October 1900 (see list of his places of residence, military file – page 641 – Vosges Departmental Archives, reference 1R1317-112473).
