Description
GABON, Kota. Warrior’s knife, with a forged iron blade shaped like a veined sage leaf and a brass handle. Late 19th century. 44 x 9.5 cm. Provenance: collected in situ by Camille Urbain Narcisse CUNY (1863–1917), then passed down through his descendants. Camille Cuny, an accountant, made two trips to Gabon-Congo: the first between March 1893 and March 1896, and the second from October 1899 to October 1900 (see list of his places of residence, military file – registration sheet 641 –, Vosges Departmental Archives, reference 1R1317-112473). Family tradition holds that he took part for a time in Captain Jean-Baptiste Marchand’s mission.
