Description
GABON, Kota. Large warrior’s knife; the blade is forged iron, shaped like a veined sage leaf; the handle is made of wood and copper. Late 19th century. 56.5 x 13 cm.
Provenance: collected in situ by Camille Urbain Narcisse CUNY (1863–1917), then passed down through the family. Camille Cuny, an accountant, made two trips to Gabon-Congo: the first between March 1893 and March 1896, and the second from October 1899 to October 1900 (see list of his places of residence, military file – registration sheet 641 –, Vosges Departmental Archives, reference 1R1317-112473). Family tradition holds that he took part for a time in Captain Jean-Baptiste Marchand’s mission.
