Description
GABON, Kota. Set of three small knives with forged iron blades, wood and brass, shaped like a veined sage leaf. Late 19th century. Lengths: 34, 29.5 and 27 cm. Provenance: collected locally by Camille Urbain Narcisse CUNY (1863–1917), then passed down through the family. Camille Cuny, an accountant, made two trips to Gabon-Congo, the first between March 1893 and March 1896, and the second from October 1899 to October 1900 (see list of his places of residence, military file – registration sheet 641 –, Vosges Departmental Archives, reference 1R1317-112473). Family tradition holds that he took part for a time in Captain Jean-Baptiste Marchand’s mission.
