Description
GABON, Kota. A pair of wrought-iron spearheads, the smaller of which is decorated with barbs. Late 19th century. Lengths: 49.5 and 27 cm. Provenance: collected in situ by Camille Urbain Narcisse CUNY (1863–1917), then passed down through his descendants. Camille Cuny, an accountant, made two trips to Gabon-Congo, the first between March 1893 and March 1896, and the second from October 1899 to October 1900 (see list of his places of residence, military file – service record sheet 641 –, Vosges Departmental Archives, reference 1R1317-112473). Family tradition holds that he took part for a time in Captain Jean-Baptiste Marchand’s mission.
