Description
GABON, Kota (?). Calabash with a strap made of plant fibre, used as a sheath for spears. Late 19th century. Length: 37 cm. This calabash is reminiscent of Maasai milk gourds (Kibuyu).
Provenance: collected in situ by Camille Urbain Narcisse CUNY (1863–1917), then passed down through his descendants. Camille Cuny, an accountant, made two trips to Gabon-Congo, the first between March 1893 and March 1896, and the second from October 1899 to October 1900 (see list of his places of residence, military file – registration sheet 641 –, Vosges Departmental Archives, reference 1R1317-112473). Family tradition holds that he took part for a time in Captain Jean-Baptiste Marchand’s mission.
