Description
Camille GAUTHIER (1870–1963) and Paul POINSIGNON (1872–1916), Nancy – Lorraine. Art Nouveau children’s bedroom set comprising a wardrobe with a cat-motif marquetry decoration (190 x 70 x depth 40 cm), and a bed, the headboard adorned with a marquetry design of mice (97 x 198, suitable for a 90 x 190 cm mattress). Waxed pine and cherry wood. Circa 1906–1910. Minor imperfections and repairs.
Provenance: according to family tradition, this bedroom belonged to Christian Dior as a child in Grandville, at the villa ‘Les Rhumbs’, which the family purchased in 1906. Financial setbacks forced the Diors to sell the furniture as early as 1935, followed by the villa in 1938. It was then repurchased by the former owners.
This bedroom set was entered into the 1906 Bon Marché competition for domestic furniture (Gauthier won two first prizes and the gold medal, notably for this set). Our set is reproduced on p. 84 in *Camille Gauthier, Cabinetmaker and Art Nouveau Industrialist*, by Justine Posalski, ACAPA-Ville de Villers-lès-Nancy, 2026.
