Description
Auguste HERBST (1878–1951), Nancy – Lorraine. The Var Gorges. Watercolour on paper, signed and dated in the lower right-hand corner. 71 x 97.5 cm (image size). In a very fine moulded mahogany frame from the GALLE workshops.
Born in Strasbourg, Auguste Herbst left his native Alsace for Nancy, where he discovered the avant-garde work of the artists of the École de Nancy at the turn of the century. A renowned colourist, he collaborated notably with Émile Gallé as a draughtsman, and became head of the drawing workshop and artistic director of the Gallé establishments upon the death of Louis Hestaux in 1919.
