Description
Early 17th-century Dutch school, a follower of Cornelis van der VOORT. Portrait of an aristocrat wearing a lace headdress and a wide ruff. A widow’s coat of arms on the left, within a lozenge-shaped shield: divided, first of silver with an azure fess charged with three gold pears, second of azure with two broies (?) placed side by side. Oil on canvas. 64 x 51 cm.
Provenance: collection of George Price BOYCE (1826–1897), British Pre-Raphaelite painter, (handwritten label on the stretcher stating that he was then living at the famous address of 14 Chatham Place, Blackfriars, London – a later addition indicates the address of West House in Chelsea); the Aubry collection, Rosières-aux-Salines.
