Description
SPAIN. Don Nicolás ALZAGA (1861–1931). Spanish cabinet, known as a ‘bargueno’, on its own base, made of blackened wood and decorated with metal fittings. The interior reveals a richly decorated architectural design featuring columns, concealing drawers and doors. With its key. 109 x 47 x height 162 cm. Damage and missing parts; some elements require reattachment.
A typewritten note states that this bargueno was modelled on a 16th-century original that belonged to Don Jesús Grinda of Madrid. Don Alzaga, whose works were awarded a silver medal at the Santander Exhibition in 1887, a gold medal at the Paris exhibition in 1902, and another gold medal in 1905 at the Santander exhibition, crafted this bargueno using the techniques of the old masters. He used walnut exclusively and, for the columns and inlays, bull’s bone. The creation of this piece took 27 years. It was presented, outside the competition, at the Santander International Exhibition in 1919. The sculptor Mariano Benlliure wished to acquire it, but was unsuccessful.
Provenance: Nicolás Algaza, then Nicolás Algaza the younger by inheritance. Donated by the latter to a friend in 1947. Mrs Stahl, Nancy, then donated to her daughter, Geneviève Aubry (1948–2025), née Stahl.
