LORRAINE SCHOOL. Portrait of Pope Stephen IX, the 154th Pope of the Catholic Church. Oil on canvas. Early 18th century. 73 x 59 cm overall. Born Frederick of Lotharingia (“Lorena”, as indicated by the letter), or Frederick of Ardennes, around 1020 in Dun-sur-Meuse, Stephen IX died on 29 March 1058 in Florence. His portrait is a fictionalised depiction, as is his coat of arms, which is based on the more generic coat of arms of the Fabrique de Saint-Pierre-de-Rome.
