Description
Adolphe Victor GEOFFROY-DECHAUME (1816–1892) and Auguste Maximilien DELAFONTAINE (1813–1892). A set in bronze and red marble, adorned with rich chiselled and openwork decoration of Persian inspiration, comprising a pair of candelabra (height 28 cm) and a clock (height 41 cm); the spherical dial, with Persian numerals painted on white enamel, flanked by two dragons whose tails terminate in an interlaced scrollwork inhabited by fantastical birds; a lozenge-shaped base, adorned with chimeras, resting on four slender feet upon a multi-lobed red marble plinth, encircled by a gilded bronze frame with four openwork feet; movement stamped ‘Japy Frères’. Signed. With its key. Napoleon III period. (damaged finial; minute chips on the marble; slight wear) Geoffroy-Dechaume’s accounts reveal that, in 1851–1852, he supplied the design for a clock known as a ‘Persian’ clock to the bronze-worker Delafontaine. The execution was entrusted to the sculptor Elmerich. An old photograph of the set, taken by Charles Marville, shows that it comprised not only a clock and two candelabra, but also two bowls (now missing).
