Description
Gustave NOEL (1823–1881) for PICHENOT-LOEBNITZ. “Granville, Manche”. Large ceramic plaque with glazed decoration. Signed and titled in the lower left-hand corner; manufacturer’s mark on the reverse. In its blackened wooden frame. Late 19th century. 46.5 x 81 cm. (slight cracks around the edges, likely caused during firing; chips on the edges, invisible once the plaque is framed; a few minor imperfections on the frame)
Like Alfred Beau, this artist began to specialise in ceramic paintings from 1870 onwards, no doubt under the influence of Michel Bouquet. He submitted works to the salons regularly, but in small numbers, which explains the rarity of his works today.
