Description
Louis-Théodore DEVILLY (1818–1886), attributed to. Landscape of the area around “Valcour” (sic), near Toul. Watercolour and gouache, signed lower left, monogrammed ‘TD’, inscribed with the location and dated ‘18 September 1884’. 27.5 x 40 cm, image size. Louis-Théodore Devilly, born in Metz in 1818 and died in Nancy in 1886, was a painter and illustrator renowned for his historical and military scenes. A pupil of Laurent-Charles Maréchal in Metz, then of Paul Delaroche in Paris, he received a solid academic training which had a profound influence on his work. His paintings are distinguished by the rigour of their drawing, the precision of their details – particularly in the uniforms and landscapes – and a dramatic composition typical of 19th-century Romanticism. After the war of 1870, he left his hometown to settle in Nancy, which had remained French. There he was appointed director of the École nationale des beaux-arts. Another view of Valcourt (this time, the name of the village is spelled correctly) is also known. It is known that in 1884, the year this painting was produced, seven watercolours were reportedly exhibited at the Salon of the Lorraine Society of Friends of the Arts.
