Description
Antoine DUTAC (1786–1857), attributed to. Seascapes. A pair of oil paintings on panel, each signed on the reverse, and one bearing the inscription ‘Monsieur Dutac, peintre, Epinal’. 18.5 × 28 cm. Alongside his profession as a surveyor and draughtsman for the land registry, Antoine Dutac was also a landscape painter, and exhibited regularly at the Salon from 1817 to 1851. Together with his brother Pierre Nicolas, in 1832 he took over the Barbelouze marble works (Golbey), which notably supplied the stones for the floor of the Panthéon. On this land, they carried out their first experiments in irrigating the Moselle, which put an end to the river’s frequent flooding and thus made it possible to cultivate the surrounding meadows.
